This morning was an exciting day at work. Not necessarily because of what I was working on, but because of an email I got at 10:30 am.
The IT group sent out an email to anyone who had ever used the Unix network. The email was sent to a list for the notification that certain protocols were going to be removed. A single person set off a chain of events that began to bog down Outlook to the point where I had to just close it.
Someone decided to REPLY ALL with a subject of "UNSUBSCRIBE." In the body of the email the user stated that she had not used the server in 7 years. About 40 emails followed with the word "Ditto" in the body... all sent to REPLY ALL.
At one point Anthony attempted to send out an email to everyone that said the following:
stop replying to all, please
To which someone replied all:
I would like to unsubscribe from the unsubscribe list.
and
Can I unsubscribe from these unsubscribe requests?
After which people still kept hitting REPLY ALL with "Ditto," referring to the original unsubscribe request. These people were chief engineers, financial analysts managers and directors...
One person chimed in (with REPLY ALL),
Is everyone really going to reply to all to unsubscribe?
Another responded with,
Ditto. Sorry, couldn't resist. :-)
One systems engineer directly replied to the first call to cease using the REPLY ALL actually replied with
Please remove me as well.
Some other excerpts include:
HEY! You CANNOT unsubscribe fromby sending an e-mail to that alias -- you just bug the entire population of with UNIX accounts!!! Please get a clue and send an e-mail to the Help Desk ONLY, asking them for you to be removed from !!!!
I, for one, would like to remain on this mailing list, its the most fun I have had all day!
Pot Calling the Kettle Black
Of the roughly 37 people who have requested Unix unsubscribe, not one of you has asked the sender of the original message.
I would like to unsubscribe from the "Please do not reply to all" list, thank you.
65 emails and counting.
